Denver's the place for me

This past weekend I went to Denver to visit my girlfriend, Laura. The trip was great, not only because I got to spend time with her, but also because I think Denver is one of the most fun and beautiful cities.

Since I grew up in a town of 900 people, Charleston seems big to me, and even more culturally diverse, but it's nothing like Denver.

Charleston also has its aesthetically pleasing sites, such as Fox Ridge-especially in the fall. Denver, however, completely blows Charleston out of the water when it comes to beautiful landscape. The sky appears bluer, the clouds seem larger and the mountains…I don't even know how to explain the mountains other than simply breathtaking!

Friday night Laura and I went on an "art walk." Over 30 galleries and art studios were open on a six-block section of Santa Fe Drive. We, along with hundreds of others, viewed art of nearly every genre, as well as enjoyed refreshments and were able to partake in wine tasting. The art walk takes place year-round every first Friday of each month.

While there are opportunities to view art around Charleston, the experience is nothing compared to that of Denver. Perhaps when the Dounda Fine Arts building is finally completed here on campus, there may be a slight increase in Charleston's artistic culture.

On Saturday Laura and I went to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We spent the day exploring the three-story museum, viewing exhibits, which included "Egyptian Mummies," "North American Indian Cultures," "Prehistoric Journey," and "Space Odyssey."

The museum is also the current home of "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition," which included information about various passengers and the ship itself, recovered artifacts and even a 4,000 lbs. section of the ship's hull (which Laura, a Titanic fanatic, was very upset about being removed from the bottom of the Atlantic). Visitors were able to walk through re-created sections of the ship and interact with actors portraying passengers and crew members.
