Most students can tell you whether they like coffee - and they may be able to tell you their favorite coffee shop, which they frequent most likely out of habit or for the ambiance. But very few can tell you where the coffee they buy comes from, how many hands might have touched it or how much the farmer who grew the beans earned at the end of the day.

People in Africa need jobs.

Out of all of Chicago's public housing developments, none are quite as infamous as the Cabrini-Green Homes. Robert Taylor Homes was much larger, Stateway Gardens had bigger poverty rates, and Ida Wells Homes saw more crime; but unlike those developments, Cabrini-Green is located within walking distance of the wealthy, commercially-vibrant Gold Coast, making its presence much harder to ignore.

Sarah Palin and the ad hominem fallacy

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

Sarah Palin made a certain comment recently that deserves a little exposition. In an article from the Associated Press on Nov. 8, several of the governor's quotes were extracted from her response to criticisms that she's received from McCain's aides. ("Palin denounces anonymous critics as cowardly") While elaborating upon the "ridiculous" nature of the allegations, she's quoted as saying, "You guys report based on anonymous sources, so it's hard to have a defense.

Rudd's 'Role Models' blends vulgarity, values

The Murray State News, Murray State University, KY

Paul Rudd is a sneaky bastard.

"Role Models," which Rudd co-wrote, is the ultimate psych-out. On its surface it seems like a kid movie: Two loveable goofballs are sentenced to 150 hours of community service at Sturdy Wings, a mentoring group. They are assigned to two hopeless cases and together, the four of them learn a lot about life and stuff.

As a preteen, freshman Taylor Eck watched "Total Request Live" everyday after school.

In the epic boy band battle of the late '90s she sided with *NSYNC. As for pop princesses, her allegiances lay with Christina Aguilera.

But when asked about her feelings on TRL's final countdown, Eck said she had no idea the show was even being canceled -- or still on the air.

A couple of nights ago I had the pleasure of eating a chicken-breast sub with tangy Southwest sauce from an on-campus eating establishment. Since I planned on carrying the delectable sandwich no more than 10 feet from the register to a table to eat it, I decided to ask the sandwich maker not to give me a plastic bag to carry it.
